5 Reasons Why We Don't Have Pierced Ears

5 Reasons Why We Don't Have Pierced Ears

For those who grew up without pierced ears, you’ve likely had to deal with incredulity when people discover you don’t have your ears pierced. “What? No way!” or “Wow, did you not get it as a kid?” paired with a surprised look were very common responses. Growing up where getting your ears pierced as a child was the norm and, in a sense, a rite of passage, it can often feel isolating to feel like you’re the odd one out. However, there are so many different reasons why some people may choose to forego the piercing. We reached out to our Aiori community members to find out why you have decided to be part of the #piercefreegang.

Reasons why our aiori community members do not have pierced ears

1. Piercing Infections

As much as you try to keep your ear piercings clean, there is still a chance your piercings can become infected. As common as 20% of earlobe piercings and 30% of cartilage piercings become infected. Certainly, having to deal with infections can quickly become annoying.

2. Keloid scars

A keloid is a scar that forms when the skin is damaged (such as from a piercing) and tissue grows out from the area, making the scar bigger than the original injury. Unfortunately, keloids are also hard to get rid of.

3. Cultural

Often times, some parents are resistant to the idea of their child getting piercings. Coming from a Chinese household, large ear lobes are thought to bring luck and should not be pierced. Whether it is for an auspicious sign or your parents just didn’t like the idea of body modification, some times our parents beliefs rubs off on us!

4. Not interested

Sometimes the reason doesn’t have to be that complicated: You might’ve just never had the interest in getting it done and that is okay!

5. Bad experience with piercings

Lastly, after getting a piercing, there is a chance of your piercing closing up. Depending on you ears, it may or may not be an option to get it re-pierced in the same spot. If there is a lot of scar tissue build up, you might be better avoiding getting a piercing.
